History & Celebration of the Havasupai Ram Dance

The Havasupai Ram Dance is one of the oldest living traditions of the Havasupai people, whose homeland lies deep within the Grand Canyon. Rooted in centuries of cultural memory, the Ram Dance honors strength, renewal, protection, and the deep connection between the Havasupai Tribe and the natural world. Historically, the dance was performed during important seasonal transitions and community gatherings, symbolizing resilience, unity, and the spirit of the ram—an animal long respected for its power and endurance in the canyon’s rugged landscape.
